Hemorrhoids can cause painful hurting, burning, itching or other irritating sensations to the anal area. Conditions like constipation, pregnancy, aging and digestive diseases can cause and worsen hemorrhoids, but there are natural remedies for hemorrhoids available to help treat your pain and improve your circumstances.

As with any medical problem, don’t hesitate to talk to a doctor about your problems if you’re concerned about the severity of the situation or your best course of action going forward. Bleeding can be a symptom of other serious problems so seek a proper evaluation and diagnosis accordingly.

Natural remedies for treating hemorrhoids & minimizing pain

1. Increase your fiber intake

natural remedies for hemorrhoids - fiber imageBecause constipation is one of the major causes of hemorrhoids, treating constipation can help take care of your hemorrhoid situation. Switch to a healthful diet full of fiber- and nutrient-rich foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Kick fatty and highly-refined foods to the curb, which can just make it harder to have a bowel movement without straining. The less difficult pushing you have to do, the better off your whole system will be.

If eating right is a foreign concept to your body, you may need to add fiber-rich foods in gradually to help your digestive system slowly adjust to the healthier way of life. Even though your new diet will be better for you, the change can be a shock to your body and can produce side effects that you’re not used to like gas, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

2. Drink more liquids

natural remedies for hemorrhoids - liquids imageWater is basically Heaven’s plumbing gift to mankind, drinking more of which makes almost every health problem at least a little better. When it comes to avoiding the wait time generally required by constipated pipes, drinking more water can have a huge impact for good on your body by keeping everything moving. Plus, if you increase your daily dose of fiber but don’t get enough water into your system, the effect can actually just be more constipation, which will only worsen your hemorrhoids.

Even if you don’t want to drink a lot of water, make yourself do it anyway. After 8 glasses of water a day, treat yourself to a special glass of something like orange juice if you must and then down a few more glasses of water for good measure.

3. Eat some prunes

natural remedies for hemorrhoids - prunes imagePrunes can help soften stools and have a wonderful laxative effect. “Eat five prunes a day to keep the hemorrhoids away” doesn’t quite have the same sound as that whole apple-a-day adage, but the value of such a recommendation isn’t any less valid. Just don’t get carried away and eat a whole bag, which can overly get your bowels working and cause diarrhea.

Depending on the amount of fiber you’re already used to having, you may want to start with having more like three prunes a day and then gradually increasing your daily consumption as desired.

4. Apply witch hazel

natural remedies for hemorrhoids - witch hazel imageWitch hazel is a natural astringent, which can help shrink swollen blood vessels and minimize unpleasant itching. The irritation-reducing agent is commonly seen in over-the-counter medicated hemorrhoidal wipes.

If you want to skip out on the other ingredients that come along in the pre-packaged wipes like chemical preservatives, go ahead and just pour some witch hazel distilled liquid on a cotton swab and then apply to your ouchy skin. If you are not familiar with the natural anti-inflammatory extract, you can likely find a bottle of witch hazel at your local drugstore or natural market.

5. Use a vinegar treatment

Vinegar is a natural antiseptic with antimicrobial and astringent qualities that may be able to relieve the burning and itching sensations as well as effectively constrict the swollen veins in the anal area.

Easily you may want to avoid applying vinegar while you’re actually bleeding and wait to use this kind of treatment once the area has healed slightly and there are no actively-open wounds.

6. Take a sitz bath

Use warm water for the soak and stay seated for around fifteen minutes. Avoid using hot water that can burn or cold water that can be uncomfortable for your body to sit in for the full time.

You can take such a bath multiple times a day, as needed, if it helps soothe your pain and irritation.

7. Use a cold compress

natural remedies for hemorrhoids - cold compress imageYou can cover an ice pack with a paper or cloth towel and apply it for ten minutes, letting the ice calm the burning sensation and temporarily reduce the blood flow to the swollen veins as an anti-inflammatory method for improving the area. You can repeat this approach multiple times a day, but you may also find that alternating between cold and warm packs helps treat your discomfort well.

8. Take vitamin C

natural remedies for hemorrhoids - vitamin c imageWhether you eat vitamin-C rich foods like fruits and vegetables or pick up a supplement in tablet form, vitamin C can actually help strengthen blood vessels and get your body back on track. Fruits like oranges also have bioflavonoids, which are thought to further stabilize and strengthen veins, while reducing the inflammation, bleeding and pain that can come with hemorrhoid flare-ups.

9. Avoid irritants

10. Switch to hypoallergenic bath & body products

Natural remedies for hemorrhoids - baby soap imageIf your regular soap is too irritating on your body when you shower, go ahead and switch to something more gentle and hypoallergenic. Consider even locating a product marketed for babies or kids, which is often void of the harsh chemicals and substances that are contained in our usual picks and that can hurt sensitive skin.

11. Avoid standing or sitting too long

Natural remedies for hemorrhoids - Avoid sitting imageAvoid standing or sitting too long and lay down when you need to rest so that the pressure can be taken away from your inflamed veins. If needed, use a doughnut-shaped cushion for when you do need to be sitting.
